presson > Here is the base of my workbench under construction. The bench is the first major project I made in Germany. My woodworking goals for my time spent in Germany are primarily focused on honing my hand tool skills. This is the perfect opportunity, since I left all of my big power tools in storage in the states. The base is made from beech (European beech, of course) with Mahogany wedges driven into through tenons of the mortise and tenon joints.

presson > The slab of mahogany leaning against the far wall will be used for the skirt and vises on the workbench top. The beech leaning against the adjacent wall is part of what will become the majority of the benchtop.

presson > Usually, I don't like to work from someone else's plans. This bench is the exception to my rule. Credit for the design goes to Lon Schleining. It was featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine's 2005 Tools and Shops issue. Mr. Schleining built his bench using mostly Maple and he used walnut for the tenon wedges. I am using beech because it is much cheaper to get in Germany, and I'm dressing it up a bit with the mahogany benchtop skirt and vise jaws. Other than that, I cannot take any credit for the way this looks design-wise.
presson > Here is the design for the bed I've been promising Chrissie for years. I used a free 3D drawing program from Google called "Sketchup" to draw out my ideas. If I remember to take pictures, I will try to document the whole process from design to completion here.
